Gene Yost was one of the most dominant pitchers in Averett University baseball's history. A First Team All-Conference performer and the conference tournament MVP, Yost helped the Cougars to the 2003 conference title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Yost also earned Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) First Team All-State honors as a senior and was an All-Conference Second Team selection as a junior.

Following his collegiate playing career, Yost was drafted in the 20th round of the 2004 Major League Baseball First Year Players Draft by the Montreal Expos (now the Washington Nationals). He played four seasons in the minor leagues.

In 2013, Yost was named to the USA South Conference's 50th Anniversary baseball team.

On Oct. 18, 2014, Yost was inducted into the Averett Athletics Hall of Fame.
