James "Boo" Braxton played men's basketball at Averett, where he led the Cougars to an NCAA tournament berth and a Sweet 16 appearance in 1990. Braxton was twice named to the all-conference team and was on the conference's all-tournament team in 1990.
Braxton finished his career as Averett's all-time leading scorer with 1,806 points, averaging 17.0 points a game. He also finished his college playing days as the school's all-time leader in assists and steals.
He was later selected as one of Averett's representatives on the USA South Conference's 50th anniversary men's basketball team.
Braxton was inducted into the Averett University Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 13, 2000.
