In addition to groups such as Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers Big Sisters, Averett's student-athletes work with a variety of organizations for community service events and projects in the Danville area.
In September, the Averett football team spent the Monday of its bye week hard at work out in the community doing service projects in the Danville area. About 40 players worked at God's Pit Crew's warehouse on North Main Street. Players helped move concrete tiles and sorted them so that the tiles could be shipped to areas in need. Others helped wash the organization's trucks.
"It's good to get into the community," said senior wide receiver Greg Harbaugh, who has been doing community service with the football program for four years. "It's good for Averett and our program. It's good for the freshmen to see how we can impact the community."
Other players visited Hughes Home and helped scrape paint off Mount Zion Baptist Church.
"It brings the team together working on projects like that," Averett head football coach Mike Dunlevy said. "It also opens their eyes to how fortunate they are."
In October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Averett volleyball team sported pink shoelaces and ribbons to promote awareness. The Cougars also held "Dig Pink Day" during its matches on Oct. 3 and took up donations for cancer research.
The volleyball team's efforts were recognized by the local paper, the Danville Register & Bee.
