AUSTIN, Texas — Averett University softball senior
Jessica Long was named to the Division III Academic All-America Team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Tuesday.
Long, the two-time USA South Conference Player of the Year and four-time USA South First Team selection, batted .432 this season with 70 hits, 15 doubles, nine triples, five home runs, 61 runs scored and 36 runs batted in over 49 games. She was a perfect 44 for 44 on stolen base attempts. The native of Prospect Hill, North Carolina, earned a spot on the USA South All-Tournament Team after helping Averett win the conference tournament and earn a berth into the NCAA Regionals. Long was selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region First Team at shortstop, is eligible to become a three-time NFCA All-American (this year's team will be announced later this week) and is one of 10 finalists for the NFCA/Schutt Sports Division III National Player of the Year. She also earned USA South Player of the Week honors twice this season.
In the classroom, Long was equally impressive with a 3.7 cumulative grade point average while earning her degree in biomedical science from Averett earlier in May. Long recently earned Academic All-District accolades from the College Sports Information Directors of America, making her eligible for the Academic All-America award.
"Jessica has consistently proven herself to be one of the most elite players year after year on and off the field," Averett first-year head coach
Ashley Pyron said. "This recognition is extremely well deserved as she not only had an incredible senior year, but a testament to the kind of student-athlete she's been throughout her career at Averett."
Long is the third Averett softball player to earn Academic All-America honors, joining
Taylor Dix and
Samantha Hall who were selected in 2015.
