BURLINGTON, N.C. — No. 4 seed Shenandoah University knocked off top-seeded N.C. Wesleyan with a 17-5 victory in seven innings on the second day of the USA South Conference Tournament at Friday afternoon at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

The Hornets (30-6) stung the Bishops early with five runs in the first inning. The first two Shenandoah runs came on RBI singles, then Jasen Erberz capped the fast start with a three-run homer to center.

The onslaught continued in the second when the Hornets added four more runs, including one on a leadoff homer by Kevin Brashears.

With Shenandoah leading 10-1, N.C. Wesleyan (21-16) pieced together four runs in the fifth inning to cut the Hornets’ lead in half. The Bishops, however, gave the four runs back Shenandoah in the top of the next inning.

The Hornets added three runs in the seventh, and N.C. Wesleyan went quietly in the bottom half of the inning to end the game.

Shenandoah advanced to play No. 6 Ferrum College at 12 p.m. on Saturday in a battle of the lone unbeaten teams left in the tournament. N.C. Wesleyan will play the winner of Friday’s Christopher Newprt University/Averett University game on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
