Football's sophomore quarterback Ethan Ross was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's Offensive Player of the Week on Sunday. A native of Chantilly, Virginia, Ross made his varsity debut in Averett's 41-29 win over N.C. Wesleyan University on Saturday night. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 222 yards and two passing touchdowns, while also rushing for 47 net yards and one touchdown on nine carries. On the first play from scrimmage, Ross — on his first varsity snap — took a flea flicker and hit sophomore receiver Trevor Testerman with a deep pass down the left side that resulted in a 75-yard touchdown play after Testerman broke free for the final 40 yards to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead. Ross had two passes of 50 yards or more on the night, including one of 56 yards to senior receiver Shawn Watlington. Watlington was also the recipient of Ross' other touchdown pass, a 20-yard connection into the corner of the end zone.
