The E. Stuart James Grant Convocation and Athletic Center was opened during the fall of 1998. It is a 55,863-square foot facility that houses offices for Averett coaches and administrative staff members.

Located in the Grant Center, the university's main athletics complex, are classrooms used by the department of Physical Education, 12 locker areas for Cougar teams and their opponents, as well as a fitness room. Additionally, the athletic training room, which is used for treatment and injury prevention for Averett's more than 300 student-athletes.

The Grant Center arena is home of Averett's men's and women's basketball teams, as well as the Cougars' men's and women's volleyball teams. This facility features retractable bleachers that seat more than 2,500 Averett fans that surround the main court. There are also two synthetic full-length basketball and volleyball courts on either side of the wooden main court, which are utilized for team practice or additional competition space during tournaments.

In addition to hosting Averett athletics events, the Grant Center hosts various high school and youth tournaments and graduations, trade shows and other events. In 2011, 2013 and 2015, it was host to the world-renowned Harlem Globetrotters.
