Averett beats Shenandoah for second win in a row

Averett wide receiver Anthony Squillini caught two touchdowns in the Cougars' 33-21 win at Shenandoah.
WINCHESTER, Va. — Averett University put together a big second quarter and came from behind to beat Shenandoah University 33-21 on Saturday night at Shentel Stadium.

Averett (4-4, 3-2 USA South) trailed 14-0 after one quarter, but the Cougars rattled off 27 points in the second quarter to take the lead for good. Averett, which was coming off a 28-14 win over Greensboro College last week, notched its first two-game winning streak since 2006 when the Cougars beat Greensboro and Shenandoah in consecutive weeks.

The Cougars began their charge late in the first quarter, and their seven-play, 64-yard drive culminated with an 8-yard touchdown from quarterback Shan Fairbanks to Anthony Squillini on the first play of the second quarter.

Averett then recovered the ensuing kickoff on Shenandoah's 18-yard line when the Hornets misplayed the 54-yard kick. Five plays later, fullback Brian Daniels rumbled into the end zone to help knot the score at 14-14 with 12:53 to play in the first half.

After Averett's defense slammed the door on Shenandoah's next drive, the Cougars found the end zone again. Fairbanks teamed up with Squillini for their second touchdown connection of the night, this time from 19 yards out.

The Cougars added another touchdown on a 1-yard rush by Daniels to take a 27-14 lead, which they held when they went into the locker rooms for halftime.

Averett pushed its lead to 33-14 late in the third quarter when #Mark Williams# rushed for a 52-yard touchdown — his second game in a row with a touchdown run.

Shenandoah (2-6, 1-4 USA South) scored a touchdown with less than four minutes to play in the fourth quarter, but it was too little too late for the Hornets.

Fairbanks completed 15 of his 21 passes for 158 yards and two scores with one interception. Squillini had four catches on the night for 44 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Jeremy Dixon added five receptions for 70 yards. On the ground, Dontavious Watson paced the Cougars with 18 carries for 86 yards.

Linebacker Logan Smyth led the Cougars defense with seven solo tackles, including one of Averett's four sacks. Safety Justin McCauley had an interception.

Averett, which sits in a three-way tie for third place, travels to play Christopher Newport University next Saturday at 1 p.m.
