Last meeting
Last season, in the first-ever meeting between the two schools, Washington & Lee came from behind in the second half to beat Averett 35-21. Brian Daniel's 1-yard touchdown run and Chris Ashcraft's extra point gave Averett a 21-20 lead, but the Generals regained the lead on Stuart Sitterson's 5-yard touchdown run. Washington & Lee added another touchdown early in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

The Generals took an early 7-0 lead in that game on a 36-yard touchdown pass from R.J. Varner to Jack Martin, but the Cougars tied it when John Garcia intercepted a pass and returned it 26 yards for a touchdown. A pair of Tom Pacicco rushing touchdowns gave W&L a 20-7 lead until Shan Fairbanks found Nathan Woodruff for a 4-yard touchdown just before the half.

How the two teams stack up on offense
Unlike Averett, which has a balanced offense, Washington & Lee has a run-oriented attack. Through three games this season, the Generals have rushed for an average of 161.7 yards a game while only passing for 71.7 yards a contest. Senior tailback Stuart Sitterson has led the way, racking up 296 yards and four touchdowns on 71 carries. Sitterson was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 169 yards and two scored against Southern Virginia last Saturday.

Freshman quarterback Charlie Westfal has also been a force on the ground, running for 136 yards and two touchdowns on 35 attempts. Although the Generals don't throw it as often as the Cougars, Westfal is 19-for-36 passing with two interceptions for 179 yards and no touchdowns.

Averett, on the other hand, has found the end zone through the air and on the ground. Running backs Mark Williams and Dontavious Watson have both rushed for more than 100 yards this season, with Watson finding the end zone twice. Averett quarterbacks Philip Kwiatkowski and Shan Fairbanks have both thrown for more than 150 yards and have one touchdown each.

At wide receiver, Jeremy Dixon has nine catches for 170 yards this season and Anthony Squillini has eight receptions for 91 yards and three touchdowns.

Cougars against the ODAC
Averett has a 4-3 all-time record against teams from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Cougars are 4-1 against Guilford College and 0-1 against both Washington & Lee University and Bridgewater College. All three of Averett's non-conference games are against the ODAC this season, and the Cougars have gone 1-1 entering Saturday's game with Washington & Lee. Bridgewater beat Averett 34-13 on Sept. 6 and the Cougars defeated Guilford 31-24 on Sept. 20.
