DANVILLE, Va. — Senior
Hillary Wood's second goal of the afternoon proved to be the difference as Averett edged N.C. Wesleyan 3-2 on Sunday, giving the Cougars their first conference win of the season.
Wood broke a 2-2 tie in the 67th minute with a shot into the right side of the goal off a cross pass from freshman
Claire Armstrong.
The Cougars had to battle from behind through most of the second half. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Wood scored Averett's first goal less than four minutes into the second half on a break. Armstrong's pass gave Wood a clear shot down the middle to knot the score.
The tie didn't last long, however, as N.C. Wesleyan went right back down the field for a goal less than a minute later. The Bishops kept the 2-1 lead until senior
Meghan Cole bent a shot inside the top left corner of the goalpost in the 61st minute.
The goal was Cole's first of the season, while Wood's two scores were her fourth and fifth goals this year. That ties Armstrong, who assisted both Wood goals, for the team lead. Wood added an assist on Cole's goal off a throw in.
Both teams appeared to be head into halftime with a scoreless tie, but N.C. Wesleyan's Kellie Simons fired a shot from 25 yards out into the top of the net to put the Bishops on top with 21 seconds left in the period.
The Cougars earned their first win at home this season and improved to 3-1 when coming off a loss.
