DANVILLE, Va. — Senior running back
James Wilson rushed for four touchdowns as Averett crushed Greensboro College 50-0 during Saturday's Homecoming at the Cougar Den.
Averett (3-1, 1-0 USA South) had little trouble offensively, rushing for a season-high 266 yards against Greensboro (1-3, 0-1 USA South). Wilson accounted for 155 of those yards, the most by a Cougar since Kyle Wilson's 239 yards against Chowan on Nov. 12, 2005.
Wilson's big day helped the Cougars jump on Greensboro early. Averett's opening drive ended with a 4-yard score by Wilson, and he added a 1-yard touchdown run on the Cougars' next possession.
With Averett's defense continuing to shut the Pride offense down, the Cougars kept attacking on offense. Freshman quarterback
Kirkland Brown found senior wide receiver
Jeremy Dixon for a 9-yard touchdown in the right corner of the end zone at the start of the second quarter to help put Averett ahead 21-0.
Dixon, who added a 37-yard touchdown catch from senior quarterback
Cody Ladutko before halftime, finished with five catches for a team-high 112 yards, including one reception for 53 yards.
Wilson's 2-yard touchdown in the second quarter and 10-yard score in the fourth quarter pushed his game total to four touchdowns, moving him into second place in the program's single game record book. Only Kyle Wilson's six-touchdown performance against N.C. Wesleyan on Oct. 15, 2005.
The Cougars' 50-point margin of victory set a program record. In addition, the shutout is Averett's first since an 18-0 win at Shenandoah in 2006 and is the Cougars' highest point total since a 55-48 win over Maryville in 2006.
Averett's defense limited Greensboro to just 142 yards of total offense. Senior linebacker
Mario Huffman led the team with six tackles and a shared sack. Huffman also caught a two-point conversion and recovered a fumble on special teams. Senior linebacker
Logan Smyth added five tackles, a shared sack and a forced fumble.
The Cougars return to action next Saturday when they travel to Newport News to face USA South foe Christopher Newport University at 1 p.m.
