Box Score
WINCHESTER, Va. — Shenandoah University scored 24 unanswered points to upend Averett 24-14 on Saturday night at Shentel Stadium.
Shenandoah (3-5, 3-2 USA South) rebounded from a 14-0 deficit to take its first lead in the third quarter. Several defensive penalties — including one that nullified an Averett interception — helped Shenandoah drive deep inside the Cougars' red zone. Averett (5-3, 3-2 USA South) stopped the Hornets at the goal line on two consecutive plays, but Shenandoah finally broke through on fourth down with a 1-yard touchdown run by Wright, giving the Hornets a 17-14 advantage with 9:34 left in the third.
Shenandoah extended its lead to 24-14 on a 15-yard touchdown pass to Wallace with 5:19 remaining in the game, which helped seal the Hornets' win.
The Averett offense never could find the rhythm it had in their opening possessions. The Cougars, who totaled 138 yards on their first two drives, managed to gain just 164 yards the rest of the way.
Averett opened the game with a bang as senior
Cody Ladutko hit senior
Jeremy Dixon with a 58-yard pass down the right sideline. That helped set up a 1-yard touchdown run by senior
James Wilson with 12:45 left in the first quarter. The Wilson score extended his touchdown streak to an Averett record eight games and was his 12th this season, moving him within two of the program's single-season record.
The Cougars continued to strike on their next possession. A 28-yard run by freshman
Clayton Navarre eventually set up a 16-yard touchdown pass from Ladutko to freshman
Xavier Morgan to put the Cougars ahead 14-0 with 9:04 left in the opening quarter.
Shenandoah chipped away at Averett's lead with a school-record 48-yard field goal by Andrew Lloyd at the end of the first quarter. The Hornets lopped off some more points on their next possession. After Shenandoah stopped Averett on fourth down, Daniel Wright found Rico Wallace for a 58-yard touchdown on their first play from scrimmage to trim the Cougars lead to 14-10.
Averett had a chance to build its lead back up before the half, but the Cougars tossed an interception in the Hornets' red zone with less than a minute to play in the second quarter.
After Shenandoah took a 17-14 lead in the third quarter, Averett had a chance to tie on its ensuing drive, but the snap on a 44-yard field goal attempt went high and the ball trickled all the way across midfield. Shenandoah, however, couldn't take advantage and missed a 39-yard field goal try. The Cougars also missed a 53-yard field goal attempt on their final possession late in the fourth quarter.
Ladutko led Averett offensively with 10 completions on 29 attempts for 161 yards passing, including five passes to Dixon for 95 yards. Wilson added 86 yards rushing.
Averett returns to action in its home finale next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Ferrum College.
