DANVILLE, Va. — When Averett sophomore Taylor Ortman powered home a goal from 40 yards out in the first four minutes of the game, the Cougars could sense that it was going to be a good day. Averett scored five goals in the first half to cruise past Christopher Newport University 5-0 on Friday afternoon at the Cougar Den.

The win was Averett's first in 17 tries against CNU, which beat the Cougars in last year's USA South Conference Tournament championship game.

Averett (7-1, 1-0 USA South) scored two goals in the first five minutes of play. Less than two minutes after Ortman's goal, sophomore Pernilla Milton scored off a through ball from freshman Mathilda Hansson.

The goals kept coming for the Cougars. Sophomore Sandra Johansson scored off the rebound of sophomore Suvi Piipponen's corner kick to put Averett ahead 3-0. Sophomore Nadja Sandau added her third goal of the season off a give-and-go with Milton, who added a second goal moments later off a pass from Ortman.

With the five-goal lead, Averett fell back on defense to eliminate any chance of a comeback for Christopher Newport (3-6, 1-1 USA South).

Reigning USA South Conference Defensive Player of the Week Samantha Lupo had four saves in goal to earn her third shutout of the season.

Averett returns to action on Saturday against N.C. Wesleyan College. That game is scheduled to start at approximately 4 p.m., following Averett's home football game at the Cougar Den.
