BALTIMORE, Md. — The Averett women's soccer team defeated Wittenberg University 1-0 on Sunday afternoon to earn its first win of the season.

Senior Sandra Johansson scored the lone goal of the game off a breakaway in the second minute of play. Johansson made a darting run forward to beat her defender and placed the ball far post past the Wittenberg goalkeeper.

Averett (1-1) continued to press looking for a second goal but failed to find the back of the net. Averett outshot Wittenberg (1-1) 8-3 in the first half.

"Today's game showed our team's character and resiliency," Averett coach Carly Pearce said. "When we face adversity we are given an opportunity to show our true character and the entire team stepped up today."

The Cougars outshot the Tigers 14-8 overall, and senior goalkeeper Malin Borjesson finished the game with five saves.

The Cougars return to action on Friday against Roanoke College at 7 p.m. in Salem, Va.
