DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University's men's soccer team tied Huntingdon College 0-0 in a thrilling double overtime conference contest on Sunday afternoon at Daly Field.
Cougars' junior defensive back
Stelios Michalakis started things off with a bang for Averett with a shot in the sixth minute, but the Hawks' goalkeeper Alex Brown was able to come up with the save. Michalakis tested Brown again in the 18th minute, but his header fell right into the hands of Brown.
Sophomore midfielder
Ricki Roman came close to giving the Cougars (3-8-1, 1-3-1 USA South) the lead in the 26th minute, but Brown was able to make a play on the ball, keeping the score tied at 0-0. Averett outshout Huntingdon (2-6-4, 1-2-2 USA South) 7-3 in the first half.
The Cougars would come out strong early in the second half when senior midfielder
Nathan Brown fired off a shot in the 46th minute, but his attempt went wide of the mark. Junior midfielder
Jordan Palma gave the Hawks a scare in the 53rd minute, but his shot sailed over the post.
Averett had another opportunity to take the lead late in the game when Huntingdon fouled Brown, but Brown's attempt on the free kick was blocked by the Hawks' defense. Junior midfielder
Justin Lloyd's strike in the 88th minute was also denied by Huntingdon's defense, forcing extra time.
Cougars' junior defensive midfielder
Brian Benitez came close to giving Averett another overtime victory, but his header in the 109th minute went wide right of the post.
Brown led the Cougars with 10 shots and Benitez added four. Michalakis and Palma recorded three attempts a piece for Averett. Lloyd and Roman tested the Hawks' goalkeeper twice, while senior defensive midfielder
Sam Muir fired two shots.
The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday as they host conference opponent Ferrum College at 7 p.m.
