DANVILLE, Va. — Senior midfielder
Nathan Brown netted two goals in his final regular season game as a Cougar, giving Averett University a 4-1 win over William Peace University on senior night at Daly Field.
William Peace (3-13, 1-9 USA South) came out on a mission to upset Averett (6-10-1, 4-5-1 USA South), scoring its lone goal of the game in the second minute when Kevin Amaya took a throw in from Phillip Peaden and slipped a shot in the goal, giving William Peace and early 1-0 lead.
However, Averett junior midfielder
Jordan Palma booted his attempt past Pacers' goalkeeper Connor Johnston in the 11th minute, knotting the score at 1-1.
Brown scored his first goal of the night and his eighth on the season when he was fouled by Johnston inside the 6-yard line and buried his penalty kick past Johnston in the 39th minute, giving Averett a 2-1 lead.
Cougars' junior midfielder
Justin Lloyd came close to doubling the lead five minutes later, but Johnson was able to come up with an impressive save between the sticks, keeping the game within the Pacers reach.
Lloyd would find Brown near the end of the 44th minute and Brown took Lloyd's pass and fired a shot past Johnston, giving Averett a 3-1 advantage going into the break.
Cougars' senior forward
Chandler Carter nearly put the game away for Averett in the 55th minute, but Johnston denied Carter's shot, keeping the score at 3-1. Brown came close to completing the hat trick in the 64th minute, but his attempt went wide right of the goal.
Lloyd found freshman forward
Tobias Andreasson in the 74th minute and Andreasson drilled his shot past Johnson, putting the game out of reach for William Peace. Senior Christopher Koening came close to giving the Cougars their fifth goal of the game in the 78th minute, but his shot went wide right of the target.
Brown once again came close to completing the hat trick in the 87th minute, but his attempt went wide right of the mark.
Brown led the Cougars with nine attempts on goal and Carter added two shots. Senior defensive midfielder
Sam Muir had one look on goal and Palma tested the Pacers' once. Senior goalkeeper
Martin Erenstedt finished with two saves in goal.
Prior to the game, Averett's six seniors — Brown, Muir, Carter, Koenig, Erenstedt and
Rasmus Lundquist — were honored as part of senior day ceremonies.
