DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's basketball team closed out the Cougar Classic with an 85-68 victory over Columbia International University, giving the Cougars back-to-back wins in as many days. Three Cougars scored in double-figures, led by junior
Bradley Robinson's 22 points.
Averett (2-1) went up by 10 near the end of the second half when the Rams' Devyn Williams picked up a technical foul, sending Robinson to the charity stripe. Robinson sunk both free throws and senior
Cody Stephens laid his shot in off the glass, capping off a four-point swing that gave the Cougars a 41-31 lead with just over a minute left in the half. However, the Rams' Marcus Praylow hit a 3-pointer with 45 seconds remaining in the half, giving Averett a 41-34 advantage going into the break.
The Cougars shot 53.8 percent from the field in the first half along with going 11-for-15 from the free throw line to help them get in front of Columbia International (1-6).
Averett extended its lead to double digits several times early in the second half with the help of Robinson and senior
Cody Stephens hitting 3-pointers. A Stephens layup gave the Cougars a 55-42 advantage with 14:09 to play. Columbia International pulled within eight several times down the stretch, but Averett held them off each time as Stephens scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half
In addition to his 22 points, Robinson added nine rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals. Junior
Carter Jones added 17 points, while Stephens and sophomore
Charles Bryant chipped in six rebounds. As a team, Averett shot 50.9 percent — the second consecutive night where the Cougars shot better than 50 percent from the floor.
Ryan Gibson led the Rams with 15 points.
