ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Averett University volleyball picked up a pair of USA South Conference victories with 3-0 wins against both William Peace University and host N.C. Wesleyan College on Saturday.

Less than 24 hours after holding their own in a loss to No. 9 Christopher Newport University, Averett (10-8, 5-1 USA South) took that confidence into Saturday's conference play and left with a pair of dominating performances. The Cougars knocked off William Peace 25-16, 25-11 and 25-19 early in the afternoon, then crushed N.C. Wesleyan 25-20, 25-4 and 25-8 to finish the day.

Against William Peace (4-14, 2-3 USA South), Averett got a team-high 13 kills from freshman Sarah Smoot. Freshman Hannah Shields added a double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs, while freshman Christiana Summa added a team-best 12 digs. Senior Nicole Barringer tallied 28 assists with four service aces. As a team, Averett hit .297, including a .640 hitting percentage in the second set.

In the win over N.C. Wesleyan (2-12, 1-5 USA South), Averett edged the Battling Bishops 25-20 in the first set, but limited N.C. Wesleyan to a total of 12 points the next two sets. Shields finished with 15 kills and nine digs, Smoot and junior Leslie Fulton each had eight kills and Summa totaled 10 digs. Barringer added 33 assists, seven digs and four service aces.
