DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's basketball team had its five-game win streak snapped in a tough 69-58 conference loss to Greensboro College on Wednesday night at the Grant Center.
Â
Averett (10-6, 4-2 USA South) had trouble containing Greensboro's Simeon Howard, who went 5-for-7 from beyond the arc and scored 19 points before the break to help Greensboro (10-6, 3-2 USA South) build a 41-33 lead at the half. Despite the deficit, Averett opened the second period on a 10-5 run to tie the game at 46-46 when junior
Trevor West kissed his shot off the glass at the 11:28 mark, giving the Cougars some momentum.
Â
Greensboro, however, was able to take the lead for good when Howard nailed his 3-point attempt, giving the Pride a 49-46 lead moments later. Although the Cougars stayed within striking distance, they never got closer than four points in the final four minutes. Greensboro's 12-3 run to end the game sealed the road win for the Pride.
Â
The Pride led by as many as 13 in the first period when Howard nailed his fifth 3-pointer of the period at the 2:46 mark. However, the Cougars used a 7-0 run over the course of the next minute to cut the Pride's lead down to six. Sophomore
Charles Bryant sank a jumper with 1:23 left, cutting Greensboro's advantage to 37-31. Averett was able to get its deficit back down to two possessions when Bryant made his layup, making the score 39-33 with 48 seconds left in the half before Greensboro extended its lead back to eight at the break.
Â
West led the Cougars in scoring, finishing with 17 points. Bryant recorded his second-consecutive double-double and his fifth overall for the season, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Junior
Bradley Robinson added 12 boards.
Â
Although Averett was able to make several runs throughout the game to keep it close, it had trouble shutting down the Pride's offensive attack. Greensboro shot 42.1 percent from the field overall and went 8-for-16 from 3-point range in the first half. Howard scored 19 of his 29 points by halftime.
Â
The Cougars suit up again on Sunday as they battle conference foe Piedmont College at the Grant Center at 1 p.m.
