STAUNTON, Va. — Freshman guard
Samm Chandler put up 22 points, 11 rebounds and 10 steals in Averett University's 87-37 blow-out win over conference opponent Mary Baldwin on Wednesday night.
Â
Not only did Chandler set career-highs in points and steals while also matching a career-best five assists, she also put her name in Averett's record book. The shooting guard became only the fourth player in program history to produce a triple-double and the first to record steals in the combination. The last Cougar to accomplish the feat was Amber Kern who had 15 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Ferrum College in 2000. Chandler's defensive performance also set a new school record in steals, passing Laurnel Fountain's nine steals against Bennett College in 1990.
Â
Chandler helped Averett (6-7, 4-3 USA South) get off to an early start with 15 points in the first half. After getting a comfortable 12-point advantage, senior point guard
Aundrea Burns hit a layup capping a 10-0 run to put the Cougars ahead 37-15 with 7:13 left to go in the half. Burns finished the night with 12 points to match her career-high.
Â
The Cougars' defense held Mary Baldwin (0-11, 0-5 USA South) to just 11 points in the second half to easily snag their second consecutive conference win.
Â
Sophomore forward
Brianna Taylor and junior guard
Jessica Myers also scored in double-figures for the Cougars with 11 points apiece. Taylor added nine rebounds.
Â
After a five-game road swing, Averett returns to the Grant Center on Saturday to host Piedmont College at 3 p.m.
