FERRUM, Va. — The Averett University women's soccer team fell short in an 8-3 conference loss to Ferrum College on Wednesday evening at Penn-Roediger Field.
Â
Junior midfielder
Annalies Jobsis notched her first goal of the season when she ripped the ball from 20 yards out at the 6:17 mark to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. Ferrum (9-4, 4-4 USA South) answered late in the first half on a penalty kick from Morgan Funck after Averett's goalkeeper
Bailee Brown was given a red card for running into a Ferrum player on a break away opportunity, and that was the turning point for the Cougars.
Â
The Panthers capitalized off Brown's absence in the opening minutes of the half with two quick goals to put Ferrum up 3-1. Even after two more goals from the Panthers, Averett (2-8-2, 2-5-1 USA South) still worked to defend the net and attack offensively. Freshman forward
Skye Gunn found the back of the net on a dish from
Amanda Gustavsson to close the gap, but Ferrum managed to continue its scoring.
Â
The Cougars have one more road game against top-ranked Meredith College on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. before returning to Daly Field to take on Covenant College. Â
