GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro College's fourth-quarter rally helped propel the Pride past Averett University 48-46 in USA South Conference football action Saturday afternoon.
Averett (1-4, 1-1 USA South) led 40-27 following senior receiver
Terrance Owens II's touchdown catch — his second of the game — with 13:31 remaining. Yet, Greensboro (1-5, 1-2 USA South) answered on its next possession with a touchdown that pulled the Pride within 40-34 with 10:02 to play.
The Cougars were driving deep into Greensboro territory when the Pride's Herbert Bridges picked off a pass. That turnover sparked an eight-play scoring drive capped off by Cortez Vernon's 2-yard touchdown to tie the game. Ryan Campbell's extra point put Greensboro in front 41-40 with 3:56 to play.
Averett was left with plenty of time to counter. A good return by senior
Ray Brown helped Averett start its drive at its own 45-yard line. An 11-yard run by sophomore
Travis Jones got the Cougars into Greensboro territory. However, two plays later, Greensboro picked off another Averett pass as Micah McMaster returned it 58 yards for a touchdown — his second interception returned for a score on the day.
Trailing 48-40 with 2:31 left, Averett still had an opportunity to answer. And the Cougars did. They marched down the field in exactly a minute, with Brown scoring from 27 yards out to get the Cougars within 48-46. Unfortunately for Averett, Greensboro stopped sophomore
Kelly Hall on a rush attempt on what would have been the tying two-point conversion attempt.
Greensboro recovered the onside kick and escaped with the two-point victory on its Homecoming.
Averett dug itself out of a huge first-half hole. Although the Cougars led 6-0 early on Jones' 1-yard touchdown, Greensboro scored two rushing touchdowns and got a pick-six to take a 21-6 lead with 21 seconds left in the half. Averett closed the gap thanks to two Greensboro personal foul penalties on the kickoff. Hall found Owens for his first touchdown of the day on a 29-yard pass as time expired to trim the Pride's lead to 21-12 at the break.
Jones then gave Averett momentum with his 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half, which pulled the Cougars within 21-19. Jones added his third total touchdown of the day on a 2-yard run to push Averett in front 25-21, and following a Greensboro turnover, Brown later scored from 1-yard out to extend the Cougars' lead to 32-21.
Owens led Averett with eight catches for 132 yards and two scores for his third multi-touchdown game and third 100-yard receiving game of his career. Hall also had a career-high 295 passing yards.
Junior
Kevin Norcott led Averett's defense with 13 tackles and one forced fumble.
Averett will host Maryville College on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m. at Daly Field as part of its Homecoming Part 2 event.
