DANVILLE, Va. — George Davies and Hayden Puryear struck late in the first half as Maryville College claimed a 2-0 win over the Averett University men's soccer team on Senior Night at Daly Field.
After being on the defensive end for much of the first half, Maryville (12-2-2, 6-1-2 USA South) got on the board when Davies took a deflection in front of goal and buried his attempt into the back of the net to put the Scots ahead 1-0 at the 34:56 mark. Six minutes later, Maryville doubled its lead in the 40th minute when Puryear took a pass from Andrew Sullivan and made good on his attempt.
Despite the loss, Averett (5-11, 4-5 USA South) came out firing early, posting four shots in the first 11 minutes, but the ball didn't bounce the Cougars way and they were unable to get on the score sheet.
For the second straight contest, Averett outshot its opponents as it fired 15 shots to Maryville's 12. The Cougars had a trio of opportunities late in the game to take the lead but had a shot blocked by the Scots' defense and had two attempts hit the post to keep the score at 2-0.
Freshman
Felix Squire led Averett with five attempts, while sophomore
Tobias Andreasson recorded four and senior
Jordan Palma chipped in with three.
Even with the loss, the Cougars still control their fate in qualifying for the USA South Conference Tournament. Averett currently sits in fifth place with the top eight teams earning a bid.
The Cougars conclude their regular season schedule on Oct. 28 when they travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, to take on William Peace University in conference action.
