DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's soccer team fell 5-0 to Greensboro College in conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Craig Gage gave Greensboro (4-4-1, 1-0-1 USA South) a 1-0 lead at the 3:49 mark when he took a pass from Warren Washington and fired it into the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Firing back quickly, freshman
David Cuperman, fresh off his game-winning double overtime goal against Piedmont College, nearly found an equalizer for Averett (2-7, 1-2 USA South) eight minutes later but his shot went wide of the mark.
Scott Fatyol doubled the Pride's lead in 31st minute when he headed in his shot to make it 2-0 Greensboro. The Cougars nearly cut the Pride's lead in half five minutes later when freshman
Jake Searcy ripped a shot at goal but his attempt was blocked by Greensboro's defense.
Picking up where they left off, the Pride opened up the scoring in the 47th minute when Morgan Stevenson found Shaun Watt for a goal, giving Greensboro a 3-0 advantage. Nearly three minutes later, Gage added an assist to his game resume, finding Watt for his second goal of the game. Nate Gage rounded out the scoring for Greensboro in the 79th minute.
Senior
John Matrisciano recorded six saves for the Cougars between the sticks.
Averett travels to Bridgewater, Virginia, to battle Bridgewater College on Oct. 6 to conclude the non-conference part of its schedule.
