SALEM, Va. — Averett University volleyball split a pair of non-conference matches on Sunday at Roanoke College. The Cougars defeated Virginia Wesleyan College 3-1, but had their 11-match winning streak snapped in a 3-0 loss to host Roanoke.
Averett (26-10) beat Virginia Wesleyan 25-19, 31-29, 17-25 and 25-20 to open the day. Sophomore
Hannah Shields had a solid day, totaling 25 kills and nine digs. Senior
Leslie Fulton and sophomore
Jessica Sheek added 10 kills and seven kills, respectively. Sophomore
Christiana Summa paced the Cougars with 18 digs. Senior
Lindsey Boles chipped in 12 digs and senior
Katelyn Holley had 10 digs. Freshman
Danielle Reed had 14 assists and 11 digs in the win over the Marlins.
Roanoke topped Averett 25-18, 28-26 and 25-16 to finish the day. Shields also led Averett in kills against the Maroons with 13 and added 15 digs for a double-double. Summa and Boles each had 14 digs, with Reed making 23 assists and 10 digs.
Averett turns its attention to the USA South Conference Tournament quarterfinals, where the Cougars will face William Peace University on Friday.
