MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Averett University football's season came to a close with a 44-13 loss at Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon.

Huntingdon (9-1, 7-0 USA South), which clinched the 2015 USA South Conference championship last week, became the fourth team to run the table in the conference since the league formed in 2001. The last team to go 7-0 was former conference member Christopher Newport University in 2011.

The Hawks' defense held Averett (2-7, 2-4 USA South) in check through three quarters. The Cougars finally broke through with 4:45 left in the game when senior quarterback
Drew Evans found junior tight end
Taylor Booze for a 6-yard touchdown pass to make the score 37-7.

Averett recovered the onside kick to get the ball back. Evans then tossed a 67-yard touchdown pass to senior receiver
Terrance Owens II to cut Huntingdon's lead to 37-13 with 4:31 remaining.

The Hawks recovered Averett's next onside kick attempt and returned it for a touchdown to help seal the game.

Huntingdon built a 21-0 lead by halftime, then tacked on 16 points in the third quarter to extend its lead.

Evans finished 3-of-6 passing for 86 yards and two touchdowns after entering the game in the second half. Owens' touchdown was his lone catch of the day. Sophomore
Myles Bennett had a team-high four catches for 48 yards.

The Averett defense was led by senior safeties
Nathan Driver and
Tavaras Johnson, who had 12 tackles and 11 tackles, respectively. Senior
Michael Reives added nine tackles in his final game as Averett said farewell to its 19 seniors.
