GREENSBORO, N.C. — Senior center
Carter Jones pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds and the Averett University men's basketball team had four players score in double digits en route to a 74-62 non-conference victory over previously unbeaten Guilford College on Tuesday at Ragan-Brown Field House.
Â
Junior
Charles Bryant led the way for Averett (3-1) with 19 points, while sophomore
James Contreras Jr. and senior
Bradley Robinson each added 12. Senior
Trevor West chipped in with 11. Jones also scored seven in the victory, Averett's first on Guilford's home court since 2006.
Â
Averett established its biggest lead of the night when West sank a 3-pointer to give Averett a 56-37 lead with 10 minutes left in regulation. Determined, Guilford (3-1) used a furious run late in the game to get within five with just under two minutes remaining thanks to several turnovers. However, the Cougars held off the Quakers down the stretch with several big stops and defensive rebounds, and Contreras went 4 for 4 from the charity stripe in the final 33 seconds to push Averett's lead back to double figures for good.
Â
Guilford took advantage of a slow start from Averett to build a 5-0 lead just a minute into the game. However, the Cougars used a 15-9 run to take their first lead of the game thanks to a 3-pointer from Robinson. Averett built an eight-point lead several times in the first period and led 39-32 going into the break.
Â
The Cougars shot 41.8 percent from the field and went 24 for 31 from the free throw line. The Cougars also outscored the Quakers by 10 in the paint. Defensively, Averett forced 12 Guilford turnovers on its way to 19 points.
Jones, with his 13 rebounds, moved solely into eighth place all-time on the program's career rebounding list to give him 499. He is 12 rebounds shy of Jonathan Rumley for seventh place.
Â
The Cougars take the court again on Nov. 29 to host Randolph-Macon College at 5 p.m. in the home opener for Averett.Â
