DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's basketball team had its five-game win streak snapped with a 77-60 non-conference loss to Lynchburg College on Monday at the Grant Center.
Â
Averett (7-2), playing its third game in four days, trailed 41-29 with 18:23 left on the clock. However, the Cougars broke off a 13-3 run to pull within two, 44-42 at the 12:02 mark. Averett switched to a zone defense and Lynchburg (6-3) took advantage of it, drilling five 3-pointers over a five-minute span as part of a 15-0 run to help build a 66-47 lead with 6:08 remaining. The Cougars got back to within 12 thanks to freshman
Austin DeLucia's layup with 7:14 left, but Averett wasn't able to get any closer the rest of the way.
Â
The first half saw the Hornets rotating between a zone and man-to-man defense that took away Averett's inside game. Lynchburg led by 18 several times in the first period, but the Cougars heated up late in the half and cut their deficit to 37-29 at the break.
Â
Senior
Devontae Pannell led the Cougars with a career-high 12 points, while sophomore
Darin Ketner chipped in with a career-high 11 points as well. Senior

Â
Averett outrebounded Lynchburg 48-44. Junior

Â
Two Cougars continued their climb up the program's top 10 in respective categories. Robinson moved into seventh place on Averett's all-time scoring list with 1,111 points, passing 2015 Averett Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Antonio Seay (1988-90), who had 1,106 points. Jones jumped to sixth place on the program's all-time rebounding list with 543, surpassing the total of 534 by Kenny Joyce (1977-79).
