DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University women's basketball team ended its regular season with a 73-59 conference win over Meredith College on Sunday afternoon at the Grant Center.

Meredith (11-14, 10-9 USA South) came out the gate shooting 6-for-6 from the field to gain a quick eight-point advantage in the first four minutes of play. Averett (11-14, 9-10 USA South) used its full-court pressure to slow down the Avenging Angels and build a 9-0 run that allowed the Cougars to regain the lead on a 3-pointer from freshman guard
Frida Lundquist. She scored a career-high 17 points to lead all scorers and matched her career-best of seven rebounds.

The Cougars sank a season-best of 11 shots from behind the arc out of 22 attempts. Freshman guard
Samm Chandler knocked down four shots from long-range while senior point guard
Aundrea Burns hit three.

Midway through the second half, Averett capitalized in transition to extend its lead as Avenging Angels went scoreless in five consecutive possessions. Jessi Hayes was the only player from the Meredith who managed to consistently score. She ended the afternoon with 24 points.

Along with Lundquist, three other Averett players finished with double-figures. Chandler put up 15 points and seven rebounds, and sophomore forward
Brianna Taylor added 13 points while Burns finished with 11. Sophomore forward
Alexis Sollars contributed eight points and eight rebounds.

The Cougars return to action on Thursday at 7 p.m. to take on No. 1 seed Maryville College in the USA South Conference Tournament.Â
