DANVILLE, Va. — Senior
Nic Futrell's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Averett University a 7-6 win against Lynchburg College on Wednesday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field.
Tied 6-6 with one out in the bottom of the 10th, junior
Drew Evans' single up the middle put a runner on base for Averett. Evans stole second and advanced to third on junior
Billy McLaughlin's single. In thrilling fashion, Futrell hit a fly ball to center field, scoring Evans, providing the walk-off win for Averett (2-3).
Trailing 6-5 going into the top of the eighth inning, Lynchburg (1-6) tied the game at 6-6 thanks to an RBI double down the left field line. The Hornets had a chance to take the lead when a walk put runners on first and second base with two outs, but Averett was able to get out of the jam by forcing a fielder's choice at shortstop.
Despite the close finish, Averett jumped out on Lynchburg early, posting three-runs in the bottom of the first thanks to senior
Kevin Alvarez's two-run double. The Cougars added another run when Evans' sacrifice fly to right-field brought senior
Taylor Davis home from third, pushing Averett's lead to 3-0. The Cougars added another run in the bottom of the second to give them a 4-0 lead.
After giving up a run in the top of the third inning, Averett increased its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to Davis' two-run blast to right.
Junior
Kyle Walsh (1-0) picked up the victory in relief Averett, giving up no hits and striking out two in 1.1 innings of work. Junior
Joshua Hatcher was solid in the start, scattering a pair of hits and striking out four in five innings of work.
Offensively, Davis led the Cougars with 3 RBIs, while Alvarez brought in two-runs in the victory. Evans and freshman
Kyle Vidano each recorded a pair of hits on the afternoon.
Averett returns to action on Feb. 27 when it travels to Rocky Mount, North Carolina, to take on N.C. Wesleyan College at 2:30 p.m. in conference action.
