Baseball cruises past Marymount

DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University baseball team defeated Marymount University 11-4 on Thursday afternoon at Owen-Fulton Field, picking up its fourth win in its last five games.

After a scoreless first two innings, Averett (9-5) brought home two runs in the third to establish an early lead. Senior Chatham Currie walked to lead off the inning and stole second to get into scoring position. Sophomore Hunter Ashworth's single through the left side advanced Currie over to third and freshman Kyle Vidano's safety squeeze bunt to first brought Currie home, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Averett added an insurance run thanks to senior J.T. Crowder's RBI double down the left field line.

Despite spotting the Cougars two runs, Marymount (5-4) used a pair of RBI doubles and a fielding error by Averett in the top of the fourth to take a one-run lead. Averett, however, answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to go back in front. After a pair of singles and a fielder's choice loaded the bases with one out for the Cougars, Ashworth cleared them when he drilled a triple down the right field line, giving Averett a 5-3 advantage.

The Cougars used a three-run fifth inning to break the game open, including one on senior Kevin Alvarez's RBI single and junior Billy McLaughlin's RBI groundout. Senior Taylor Davis' two-run blast in the sixth — his fourth of the year — gave the Cougars a six-run cushion after six. Averett put another run on the board in the eighth when junior Drew Evans' RBI single brought Alvarez home on the play.

Senior left-hander Timothy Coston (2-1) was solid on the hill for Averett, scattering five hits, while striking out four in five innings of work. Junior T.J. Viracola, senior Jeffrey Younkins, junior Kyle Walsh and Evans combined for four innings to finish off the Saints.

Offensively, Ashworth paced the Cougars driving in three runs, while Davis chipped in with two. Alvarez, Ashworth, Evans, and Futrell each added two hits in the victory.

Averett takes the field again on March 15 when it travels to LaGrange, Georgia, to take on LaGrange College in a USA South Conference doubleheader at 1 p.m.
