STAUNTON, Va. — No. 25 Averett University once again demolished another opponent, blowing by Mary Baldwin College 13-5 and 16-3 on Sunday afternoon.
Â
In the opener, junior
Rhyan Scearce nailed a grand slam to left field to give Averett 5-0 lead in the top of the second. Averett (22-0-1, 12-0 USA South) built a seven-run lead by the fifth inning when freshman
Olivia Cooper singled to right field to bring in junior
Jessye Crews.
Â
Mary Baldwin (1-15, 1-11 USA South) got its first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Chrissy Comer got on base with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. While Kristen Anderson was at bat, Cromer made it to third base on a wild pitch to put her in a good position to score. Anderson then singled to left field to send Cromer home, but the Fighting Squirrels were still significantly behind 7-1. Although there was a glimpse of hope for Mary Baldwin after finally scoring, Averett scored six runs in the top of the seventh, making it harder for the Fighting Squirrels to catch up.
Â
With two outs, junior
Taylor Dix hit a 2RBI double to right field, and junior
Mary Beth Smith nailed a 2 RBI double immediately after Dix to gain an 11-1 advantage. To make it even more difficult for the Mary Baldwin, sophomore
Meredith Rudisill came behind Smith smashing the ball to left field to get her first homer run of the season.
Â
Mary Baldwin scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh with the help of Kayla Wheeler's 3 RBI homer.
Â
Scearce went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Dix went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Â Sophomore
Jessica Long finished with two stolen bases.
Â
The Cougars came out even more aggressive in Game 2 with four home runs in the first inning. Long's homer opened the game, and Mary Baldwin's pitching staff couldn't get the job done as Averett hit two consecutive home runs after junior
Jessica Griffin stepped in the box. Griffin hit the ball over the fence to center field, bringing home Rudisill and Dix. Griffin, who also got the win from the circle, ended the afternoon going 2-for-3 with four strikeouts.
Â
Later, Crews and freshman
Laura Young came in to hit home runs of their own. Â Averett led 7-0 after the first inning. Dix notched the second grand slam of the day in the top of third to increase the lead to 11-0.
Â
The Fighting Squirrels scored on Cromer's sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the third, and with two on base in fourth, Lindsey Shifflet singled to center field to bring in two runners still trailing 12-3. Averett scored another three runs in the top of the fifth to reel in the win in five innings.
Â
Sophomore
Samantha Hall had three stolen bases.
Â
Averett heads to Georgia on March 28 to take on LaGrange College in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
