DANVILLE, Va. — Freshman
Ville Hautakangas scored his first collegiate goal but it wasn't enough to lift the Averett University men's soccer team to a victory as it fell to Guilford College 2-1 in the season opener for both teams.
Trailing 2-0 in the 65th minute, Hautakangas took a ball in the center and broke away from Guilford's defense and buried a shot in the upper right to cut the Quakers lead in half. However, that's as close as Averett (0-1) would get.
Guilford (1-0) opened up the scoring in the 60th minute as Omar Solis found some space on the left side and found the back of the net to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead. Seconds later, the Cougars almost found an equalizer at the 60:56 mark, but sophomore
Tobias Andreasson's shot was saved by Eric Hayes, keeping the score at 1-0. The Quakers doubled their lead in the 62nd minute when Albion Ida added his first goal of the season to push the score to 2-0.
Despite the loss, Averett recorded 10 shots on the evening. Freshmen
Felix Squire had two shots, while freshman
David Cuperman added 3 and sophomore
Tobias Andreasson fired two. Junior
Leed Petit-Frere also contributed two shots in the contest.
The Cougars return to action when they travel to Lynchburg, Virginia, on Sept. 4 to take on Randolph College at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
