DANVILLE, Va. — Lynchburg College defeated the Averett University men's soccer team 4-0 on Wednesday evening at Daly Field.
After a scoreless first half, Lynchburg (4-1) opened up the scoring in the 69th minute when Ryan Mayolo found space and fired his shot into the back to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Averett (1-5) nearly found an equalizer five minutes later when freshman
Felix Squire tested Cory Budka, but Budka was up to the challenge, keeping the Hornets ahead by one. Just over a minute later, freshman
Huso Dukic had a look on goal, however, Budka denied his attempt. Senior
Brian Benitez almost found a way to tie the game at the 76:13 mark, but Budka was once again clutch for Lynchburg.
With seven minutes remaining in the game, the Hornets doubled their lead when Chris Dodd took a pass from Fredy Flores and found the net to put Lynchburg in front 2-0. The Hornets found an insurance goal in the 85th minute when Matt Truslow's shot found pay dirt and Mayolo rounded out the scoring for the Hornets in the 89th minute when he took a feed from Zach Thomas and fired in his second goal of the game.

Christian Hester recorded seven saves on the evening in his second collegiate start. Offensively, the Cougars recorded 10 shots in the contest. Benitez and sophomore
Tobias Andreasson paced Averett with two shots apiece.
Averett opens up USA South Conference play on Sept. 25 when it hosts N.C. Wesleyan College at 6:30 p.m.
