Demorest, Ga. — Piedmont College pulled out a 73-64 conference win over the Averett University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at the Cave Arena.

Piedmont (11-4, 6-0 USA South) went on an 8-0 run in the middle of the first quarter to gain an early 20-10 lead over Averett but the Cougars answered with a 9-2 run of their own at the start of the second period to close the gap.

After trailing 36-28 at halftime, Averett (7-6, 2-3 USA South), senior guard
Jessica Myers hoped to spark some offensive rhythm for the Cougars, coming out of the break with a 3-pointer. Unfortunately for Averett, the Lions scored in their last five possessions of the third quarter to take a 19-point lead going into the final period.

Averett tried to work its way back, and senior forward
Oneka Jones hit a lay-up to put the Cougars within 10 (70-60) with 59 seconds to go in regulation. Jones and Myers put up two more quick lay-ups, and the Cougars found themselves only down 71-64 with 19 seconds on the clock. Averett eventually ran out of time as the Lions walked away with the win.

Jones finished with 15 points and a career-high of 16 rebounds to snag her first double-double of the season. Myers and sophomore shooting guard
Samm Chandler added 16 points apiece while sophomore guard
Frida Lundquist put up 11 points. Â

Averett returns to action at the Grant Center on Wednesday to host William Peace University in a conference matchup at 7:30 p.m.
