DANVILLE, Va. — The Averett University men's basketball team had its four-game conference winning streak snapped with an 94-87 loss to LaGrange College on Sunday in the annual "Caring for Carrie" game at the Grant Center.
LaGrange (14-5, 5-3 USA South) used a lights out 3-point shooting performance from Braxton Ford in the first half to build a 48-37 lead going into the break. Ford shot 5 of 7 from beyond the arc in the first half to help the Panthers establish momentum. LaGrange shot 77.8 percent from 3-point range in the first period.
Averett (14-5, 5-3 USA South), though, was able to slow down the Panthers in the second half, limiting LaGrange to just one of seven three point shooting after the break. Despite preventing LaGrange from getting good looks outside, the Cougars still found themselves trailing 56-45 with 16:25 remaining. However, Averett found some momentum when junior
Charles Bryant knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 56-50 just over two minutes later. On LaGrange's following possession, Justyn Olson missed a 3-pointer. Senior
Bradley Robinson came down with the defensive board for the Cougars and nailed a triple to get Averett within three at 56-53 at the 14:21 mark. On LaGrange's ensuing possession, Averett forced a Panthers turnover and senior
Trevor West converted his fast-break layup in the paint to make it 56-55 with 14:01 left in regulation. The Cougars took a 57-56 lead over a minute later when West made the back end of two free throw attempts.
LaGrange, however, went on an 12-4 run over the course of the next four minutes to establish a 68-61 lead at the 9:06 mark. Undeterred, the Cougars fought back to get within two thanks to senior
Carter Jones' layup in the paint with 6:55 on the clock. That's as close as Averett would get though as LaGrange utilized effective free throw shooting down the stretch to seal the game.
Robinson recorded a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds on his way to a double-double, while Jones also picked up a double-double of 11 points and 11 boards. West chipped in with 17 points and Bryant contributed 12 points and seven rebounds.
Jones moved into sole-possession of fourth-place on Averett's all-time leading rebounders list, passing former teammate Marquis Scott (2009-13) who had 612. Jones has recorded 622 rebounds in his career at Averett.
Averett hosts Covenant College on Feb. 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the Grant Center.
