DANVILLE, Va. — Sophomore
Ville Hautakangas' goal in the 91st minute lifted the Averett men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory against Huntingdon College on Saturday at Daly Field. The victory gave the Cougars a two-game conference sweep over the weekend.
After giving up the equalizer with 25 minutes left, sophomore
David Cuperman used his speed to race down the left wing and found Hautakangas with a cross into the middle of the box. Hautakangas took a couple of steps and fired in a shot that ricocheted off the right crossbar and rolled into the goal to give Averett (5-8, 4-2 USA South) the victory.
Despite falling behind in the first 30 minutes of the contest, Huntingdon (2-7-1, 1-4 USA South) knotted the score at 1-1 in the 76th minute when Killian Delmore scored off a free kick from 35-yards out. Neither team found the golden goal in regulation, leading to the thrilling overtime finish.
Junior midfielder/forward
Kevin Watford recorded his first collegiate goal in the first half to put Averett up early. Watford beat his mark and took a pass from Cuperman and finished the breakaway goal to give Averett a one-goal lead at the 30:48 mark.
Averett's offense was once again electric, despite only recording two goals. The Cougars posted a season-high 30 shots. Hautakangas paced Averett with six shots while Cuperman finished with five and sophomore
Felix Squire added four. Junior
Tobias Andreasson and freshman
Daniel Surley each chipped in with three shots.
The Cougars return to action on Oct. 5 when it hosts Ferrum College in USA South action at 7 p.m.
