DANVILLE, Va. — Averett University volleyball continued its tear through conference opponents, beating Agnes Scott College and Piedmont College both 3-0 as part of the USA South quad match the Cougars hosted on Sunday.
With the two wins, Averett (16-6, 8-0 USA South) completed a perfect 8-0 run through the USA South's West Division.
That feat was completed with the Cougars win over the Lions 25-20, 25-16, 25-16. Averett was slow out of the gate against Piedmont (10-9, 3-5 USA South), which took a 10-5 lead in the opening set before the Cougars fought back to tie it at 19-19 on a block by sophomore
Keenan Marks and freshman
Brianna Williams. It was part of a six-point run that ultimately gave Averett a 23-19 advantage. The Cougars rode the momentum for a win, then pulled away midway through the next to sets to put the Lions away. Overall, the Cougars hit .413 has a team against Piedmont.
Averett junior
Hannah Shields had a team-high 17 kills, while junior
Sarah Smoot and Williams each finished with eight kills versus Piedmont. Marks and junior
Christiana Summa paced the Cougars with 12 digs each and sophomore
Emily Stanley had 10. Marks also had 35 assists.
Averett opened the day with a three-set victory over conference newcomer Agnes Scott, wining 25-7, 25-20, 25-19. The Cougars, as a team, tallied a .330 hitting percentage — including a .593 mark in the first set. Shields and Smoot led the attack with 16 kills and 11 kills, respectively, while both hitting over .300 for the match. Williams also had a strong day at the net, getting nine kills. William Peace University (14-5, 5-2 USA South) also competed in Sunday quad match. The Pacers beat Agnes Scott 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-21), then held off Piedmont 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-20, 26-24).
Averett hosts USA South foe Ferrum College on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Grant Center.
