DANVILLE, Va. — Freshman
Daniel Surley's goal in the 83rd minute completed a late comeback as Averett defeated William Peace University 2-1 on Senior Day at Daly Field.
With the game on the verge of overtime, sophomore
Felix Squire took a pass on the left side and dribbled it down the wing before crossing the ball into the box for a waiting Surley. Surley hammered home his shot for the game-winning goal.
William Peace (6-9-2, 1-8-1) appeared to be on the verge of upsetting Averett (8-10, 6-4 USA South) when Seth Cranford drilled home a deflection on a shot from Chris Deleon to put the Pacers in front 1-0 at the 72:57 mark.
However, in a cruel twist of fate for the Pacers, sophomore
David Cuperman converted on a set piece from 25 yards out to knot the score at 1-1 in the 78th minute to get the rally started for the Cougars.
The Cougars' offensive was impressive all game, recording 23 shots in the victory. Senior
Leed Petit-Frere led the way with six shots, while Cuperman tallied five. Junior
Tobias Andreasson chipped in with a trio of attempts as well.
Prior to the game, Averett's three seniors — Petit-Frere,
Taylor Jones and
Ricki Roman — were honored as part of senior day ceremonies.
Averett, with the victory, put itself in position for a seed as high as fourth heading into the USA South Conference Tournament, which starts on Oct. 29. It will be the Cougars' eighth consecutive postseason appearance, and the third under head coach
Philip Wilson.
