DANVILLE, Va. – The Averett University women's basketball team fell to Maryville College 68-49 on Sunday afternoon on the first day of the East-West Classic at the Grant Center.

Shooting 46 percent from the field during the game, Maryville (7-2) came out strong in the first quarter and built a 23-9 lead by the end of the period. Averett (5-4) trailed for the remainder of the half, but the Cougars decreased the deficit to 11 twice late in the third quarter on shots from junior guards
Samm Chandler and
Joelle Deese.

Although Maryville had a height advantage on the inside, the Cougars outscored the Scots in the paint 30-26. Chandler led Averett with 17 points and added six rebounds while junior guard
Frida Lundquist put up 10 points. Sophomore guard
Alixis Roccia finished with eight points and five rebounds as Deese contributed seven points and five steals.

Averett returns to action Monday, Dec. 19, to host Piedmont College at 3 p.m. on the last day of the East-West Classic.
