DANVILLE, Va. — Virginia Wesleyan College used a barrage of 3-pointers to defeat the Averett University men's basketball team 104-76 on Wednesday night at the Grant Center.
Virginia Wesleyan (6-2) shot an overall 59.3 percent from beyond the arc to help the Marlins to the victory. Khory Moore nailed one of his five 3's with 12:52 left in regulation to give the Marlins their biggest lead of the night at 83-43.
Despite the loss, Averett (1-5) had four players finish the night with double-digit scoring figures. Senior
Charles Bryant paced the Cougars with 16 points, while junior
James Contreras Jr. and sophomore
Jalen Burnett each chipped in 14. Freshman
Taj Thompson recorded a career-high 12 points.
On what was an unusually quiet night at the Grant Center, freshman
Louis-Patrick Mua brought the crowd to its feet when he took a pass from freshman
Jamal Forde and converted a thunderous dunk at the 1:34 mark.
The Cougars performed well under the boards, picking up 33 rebounds, including 18 on the defensive end. Bryant and sophomore
Austin DeLucia each picked up five boards to pace Averett. DeLucia's five rebounds tied his career-high set earlier in the year against Eastern Mennonite University. Burnett and freshman
Moriba Diaby each pulled down four boards for the Cougars.
Averett returns to action on Dec. 10 when it travels to Ashland, Virginia, to take on its fifth Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponent of the year in Randolph-Macon College. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
