DANVILLE, Va. – The Averett University women's basketball team secured a 64-54 conference victory over William Peace University on Wednesday night at the Herman Athletic Center.
Sophomore guard
Frida Lundquist ignited a spark off the bench for Averett (10-8, 5-5 USA South) midway through the first quarter. She put in layups to score six straight points for the Cougars, allowing them to take a 10-2 lead at the 5:40 mark. Senior guard
Jessica Myers knocked down two 3-pointers later on to help Averett go on a 17-5 run that continued in the second quarter.
The Cougars held the Pacers to just nine points in the first quarter and maintained their rhythm to lead 38-25 at the break. William Peace (6-13, 0-10 USA South) tried to catch the Cougars from behind, but the teams traded baskets throughout the third period that prevented the Pacers getting too close to Averett and that continued for the remainder of the game.
Sophomore shooting guard
Samm Chandler scored in the lane to give the Cougars a 14-point lead as Averett's held William Peace scoreless for just over three minutes in the fourth quarter. The Pacers closed the gap to nine on a triple from Zhana Gooden, but Averett held on to the lead to pull away with the conference victory.
Myers knocked down four shots from behind the arc, helping her finish with a game-high 15 points on top of five assists and three steals. Lundquist put up 13 points, nine rebounds and a career-high of five assists. Sophomore guard
Joelle Deese also grabbed nine boards.
Averett continues its road trip in Lookout Mountain, Georgia, on Friday, Feb. 5. The Cougars take on Covenant College at 5:30 p.m.
