MARYVILLE, Tenn. – No. 22 Maryville College defeated the Averett University women's basketball team 87-57 in conference action on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore shooting guard
Samm Chandler sparked Averett's offensive rhythm to begin the game, scoring eight of the Cougar's first 10 points. Later on, senior guard
Jessica Myers hit a shot from behind the arc to give Averett (11-9, 6-6 USA South) an 18-13 lead early in the second quarter, but Maryville (17-3, 10-1 USA South) went on a 25-5 run in the last eight minutes of the half as the Scots went into the break with a 38-23 edge over the Cougars.
Averett couldn't overcome the deficit from the second frame, and 3-pointers helped Maryville continue to pull away early in the third quarter. The defending conference champions also used their height advantage as a force on the inside, cleaning the glass with 21 offensive boards that led to second-chance points.
Chandler paced the Cougars with 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals as Myers added 11 points and six rebounds.
Averett returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 11, to host Emory & Henry College in a non-conference matchup at the Grant Center.
