DEMOREST, Ga. — Piedmont College defeated the Averett University softball team 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Walker Athletic Complex during USA South Conference action. The Cougars fell 3-0 in the first matchup and 11-3 in the second.
Â
Averett (14-11, 6-2 USA South) struggled to find its offensive rhythm in the first game but still managed to hold off Piedmont's scoring until the fourth inning. Piedmont (17-8, 7-1 USA South) posted two runs with Jessica Bagwell's home run to left field that gave the Lions a 2-0 lead. Despite having seven hits and no errors, the Cougars were unable to find their way home.
Â
In the second game, Averett took its first lead of the afternoon when senior right fielder
Rhyan Scearce hit a single through the left side to score junior shortstop
Jessica Long. Piedmont answered with a run in the fourth to knot the game, but Averett came back with two more runs in the top of the fifth. Long tripled to center field to bat in freshman outfielder
Essence Pulliam, and an at bat later, senior second baseman
Taylor Dix hit a bunt single to send Long home to jump ahead 3-1.
Â
Unfortunately for Averett, Piedmont scored 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a commanding 11-3 lead and end the game in six frame.
Â
Scearce and Long both went 2-for-3 with one RBI each. Â
Â
Averett returns to action on Friday, March 25, to host Huntingdon College in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
