DANVILLE, Va. — Sophomore
Kyle Vidano's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted the Averett University baseball team to a 3-2 victory over USA South Conference foe Greensboro College on Friday at Owen-Fulton Field.
Â
After Greensboro (6-21, 2-8 USA South) tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, Averett (12-14, 3-7 USA South) used a crucial hit from Vidano to take the lead for good. With runners on first and second base, Vidano stepped up and banged a single through the right side that brought home sophomore
Dallas Smithers with the game-winning run.
Â
Viracola (4-4) worked a perfect ninth to seal the important conference win for the Cougars.
Â
Trailing 2-1 entering the top of the seventh, the Pride tied the contest on an RBI single up the middle from Braedon Jewett. The Cougars, however, didn't hang their heads and answered back the following frame to take the lead and held on from there to record the victory.
Â
Averett found itself trailing by one run entering its half of the sixth. Vidano kicked things off with a single through the right side and promptly stole second moments later. Vidano later came around to plate the Cougars' first tally of the game on a RBI sacrifice fly out to right field by senior
Kyle Walsh to knot the score. Senior
Billy McLaughlin, who reached earlier on a walk, came home to score on a wild pitch and Averett went ahead 2-1.
Â
After a pitching duel left both teams scoreless heading into the fifth, Greensboro took a 1-0 lead on an Averett wild pitch.
Â
Viracola threw his fifth complete game of the year, striking out seven and scattering six hits.
Â
The Cougars return to action tomorrow when they conclude the three-game series against Greensboro with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Averett will honor the playing careers of 10 seniors on Senior Day.
