DANVILLE, Va. — Senior
Drew Evans connected for a single game, program high three home runs and drove in seven RBIs but it wasn't enough as the Averett University baseball team fell to Roanoke College 15-13 on Tuesday at Owen-Fulton Field in the regular season finale.
Averett (18-20) found itself trailing Roanoke 4-0 entering the bottom of the second inning. After junior
Trey Wall brought in the Cougars' first run of the game with a single to left-center field, Evans stepped up and took a pitch opposite field over the fence in right-center for a game-tying, three-run homer.
Evans struck again in the bottom of the fourth when he led off the frame with a solo shot to right-center to put the Cougars in front 5-4. After a batter hit by a pitch and a pair of base hits loaded the bases for Averett, senior
Nic Futrell took a walk to give the Cougars a two-run edge. Another walk with the bases juiced put Averett in front by three and an RBI single from senior
Kyle Walsh extended the Cougars' lead to four. Following an RBI sacrifice fly by Wall, Evans stepped up and delivered a three-run shot, his second of the inning, to give the Cougars a 12-4 cushion after four.
Roanoke (20-12) battled back despite finding itself in a big hole. The Maroons picked up a pair of runs in the top of the fifth thanks to an RBI single and a wild pitch to cut their deficit down to six after four-and-a-half. However, Roanoke pushed across eight runs in its half of the sixth to take the lead for good. Back-to-back RBI doubles got the Maroons within four and a bases loaded walk made it 12-9. After an RBI sacrifice fly to center and a Cougars' throwing error made it a one-run contest, Will Decker drilled a two-run double to center that put Roanoke ahead by one. Clark Crutchfield rounded out the scoring in the frame for the Maroons when he slapped a double to left that gave Roanoke a two-run advantage.
Evans turned in a 4-for-5 performance at the plate to pace the Cougars offensively. Wall had a solid performance as well, collecting three hits on four at-bats and driving in three runs. Walsh and senior
Billy McLaughlin each picked up a pair of hits.
Averett begins its run in the USA South Conference Tournament on Thursday at 10 a.m. when it travels to Wilson, North Carolina, to take on top-seeded Ferrum College.
