Softball breezes past Mary Baldwin on Senior Day

DANVILLE, Va. – The Averett University softball team allowed only one run in its 2-0 sweep over Mary Baldwin College on Sunday afternoon at Cougar Field. During their Senior Day, the Cougars defeated the Fighting Squirrels 17-0 and 9-1 with both games ending in five innings.

Averett (20-13, 12-4 USA South) honored its four seniors, which included Taylor Dix, Rhyan Scearce, Mary Beth Smith and Jessica Griffin, after pounding its way to an easy victory.

Totaling 13 hits for the game and 13 runs in the second frame, the Cougars scored four consecutive times with singles to left field from Scearce and Griffin to put the Cougars ahead of Mary Baldwin 6-0. Averett went through the lineup almost two full times in the bottom of the second and continued to tack on runs. Freshman infielder Brooklyn Gibbey notched her first collegiate hit with an RBI to go along with it while Smith and freshman catcher Andrea Grant each snagged a two RBI double to help the Cougars stretch the lead. Grant and Smith both went 1-for2 with three RBIs. Smith also got the win from the circle to improve to 15-6.

Freshman Kristyn Owen finished 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs, and Griffin went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

In the closer, Mary Baldwin (10-24, 0-16 USA South) brought home its first run when Pattie Pleasants batted in Morgan Tully with a single to right center, but by then, the Cougars had already built a six-run lead. Similar to the first game, Smith and Griffin each crushed two RBI doubles to pile on runs for Averett, and Scearce nailed a two RBI homer to left field that ricocheted off the scoreboard. It was her first home run of the season.

Griffin claimed her first win from the pitching circle and also went 2-for-2 with two runs to go with her two RBIs. Scearce finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Averett travels to Raleigh, North Carolina, on Saturday April 9, to continue conference action. The Cougars will face William Peace University in a USA South doubleheader at 1 p.m.
