LEXINGTON, Va. – The Averett University volleyball team finished 2-2 in the Washington and Lee University Invitational after splitting the evening 1-1 on Saturday.
Averett (7-2) defeated Southern Virginia University 3-0 to start the day but later fell 3-0 to Randolph-Macon College. In the first matchup, Averett pulled away early with an 11-3 lead over the Southern Virginia Knights during the first set and maintained its distance. The second set was a bit closer as the Knights and the Cougars traded points midway through the game, but Averett managed to charge out front to claim the second and third in the same fashion.
Later on, Averett fell behind early in the first set of the match with Randolph-Macon as the Yellow Jackets moved ahead in part due to Averett errors. Averett was unable to catch up as the trend continued for the next two sets. The Cougars' junior outside hitter
Hannah Shields was named to the All-Tournament Team as she finished the weekend with 57 kills.
The Cougars return home on Wednesday, Sept. 14, to host Washington and Lee University at 7 p.m.
