GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford College used a late penalty kick to seal a 3-1 victory over the Averett men's soccer team on Sunday at Appenzeller Field.
The Quakers took advantage of a mistake in the box by the Cougars' defense to pick up the game's second penalty kick. Seth Garrison punched in his shot to give Guilford a two-goal advantage with just over 20 minutes left in regulation.
After picking up a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute, Guilford (4-1) committed a costly foul inside the box to give Averett (1-4) a penalty kick. Junior
Tobias Andreasson stepped up, picked his spot and buried his shot in the upper-90 on the right side to knot the game at 1-1 at the 61:46 mark.
However, Guilford answered back quickly two minutes later to pull back ahead. Christian Torres found some space down the left wing and crossed a well-timed ball into the box to Omar Solis who was waiting on the six-yard line and finished his shot, putting the Quakers up by one.
After a scoreless first half, Guilford got on the board in the 53rd minute when Solis ran down the right wing and crossed a ball into Mark Dandanell who buried his shot into the right side of the goal.
On the attack from the start of the game, Averett appeared to have gotten on the board when freshman
Sebastian Kjernholm headed in his shot, but the Cougars were called offside, negating the goal.
The Cougars picked up a season-high 15 shots on the afternoon. Second-year freshman
Austin Bramhall recorded five saves in goal.
Averett returns to action when it hosts ODAC opponent Virginia Wesleyan College on Sept. 13 at 6 p.m.
