DANVILLE, Va. – Senior forward
Annalies Jobsis nailed her second hat trick of the season to lift the Averett University women's soccer team past conference foe Meredith College 3-2 on Thursday night at Frank R. Campbell Stadium to extend its winning streak to five.
Â
Jobsis found success down the middle the entire night thanks to good looks from her teammates. The senior forward pushed Averett (5-1, 3-0 USA South) in front 1-0 in the 11th minute when sophomore midfielder
Skye Gunn connected with her cutting up the center of the field.
Â
Meredith (3-3, 2-1 USA South) snuck two goals past Averett's defense to pull ahead by halftime, but the Cougars were relentless in their efforts on offense as they moved the ball well to find good shot selections. Though the Cougars took only nine shots, six were on target in comparison to Meredith's seven of 19.
Â
About 10 minutes into the second period, senior midfielder
Johanna Ohrnberg managed to get off a shot from the far left, and despite Jaisa Loch's ability to stop the shot, Jobsis ran down field to follow up Ohrnberg's attempt. As Loch mishandled the save, Jobsis capitalized and knotted the match at 2-2.
Â
With less than seven minutes remaining and from nearly 20 yards out, junior
Christine Harris booted the ball to Jobsis as she again sprinted up the middle lane to net her third goal of the night.
Â
"Annalies is really moving off the ball well and finding opportunities to score and gets herself in great scoring positions," head coach
Sarah Chapman said.
Â
Jobsis's hat trick puts her at nine goals for the season to lead the conference while Harris now leads the team in assists. Averett's defense held up its end as it halted the Avenging Angels' scoring, clearing out every shot that came to back line, including close calls by well-placed corner kicks.
Â
"The girls figured out how to play as a team against a tough and well coached team," Chapman continued. "Our back line did really well to stay organized and tackled hard."
Â
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24, to face Methodist University in USA South action at 2 p.m. at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.Â
